Department of Surgery - Assessment

Formative Assessments

I. End of Appointment assessments conducted by the Consultants (Extended Faculty) at the Teaching Hospital

The supervising Consultant is expected to conduct an assessment at the end of the Clinical appointment consisting of MCQs and/or Short Answer Questions (SAQ) +/- OSCE.

The supervising Consultant will decide whether the student has completed the appointment satisfactorily or not, depending on the attendance, results of the assessment, maintenance of the log book and the observations made during the appointment.

The students who fail to complete the appointment satisfactorily, may have to repeat the appointment for an extended period, decided by the Supervising Consultant.

II. Mini-CEX sessions conducted during clinical appointments including the Professorial Surgery Appointment.

Mini Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX) is a structured assessment of a short encounter the student has with a selected patient. The evaluator gives the student a specific task to perform under the evaluators supervision for a period not exceeding 10 minutes, and give an immediate specific feedback for 5-10 minutes, highlighting the student’s strengths as well as weaknesses. The students are expected to note the areas of concern and take necessary action to improve. This mode of assessment is used only as a formative assessment to help the individual students to improve their clinical skills, based on the specific constructive feedback they receive from the evaluator. The specially designed ‘Mini-CEX Form in Surgery’ would be available in the Department of Surgery for this purpose.

III. Opportunities for the students to do ‘Self-Assessments’.

Students are encouraged to do Self-Assessment of the Clinical Appointments using the format given below.
