Department of Biochemistry

Biochemistry is the science concerned with the chemical constituents of living cells and the reactions they undergo. Biochemists have sought to isolate the numerous molecules found in cells, determine their structures, and analyze how they function. Sound knowledge of biochemistry is essential for the rational practice of medicine. The knowledge acquired in Biochemistry is integrated with other clinical sciences.

The department plays an active role in the teaching of Biochemistry, Clinical Chemistry & Nutrition to pre-clinical medical undergraduates. The mode of teaching will centre on lectures, tutorials/small group discussions, fixed learning modules, self-learning activities and laboratory practical classes. In addition, the Department provides ample opportunities for undergraduate and post-graduate students to pursue research under the supervision of the academic staff. The research interests encompass Clinical Chemistry, Enzymology, immunology, Medicinal Plants and Traditional Medicines, Molecular Biology, Nanotechnology, Genetics & Nutrition areas.
