Psychiatry is an interesting field of medicine that gives the opportunity to learn about the prevention and treatment of mental and behavioral disorders and the promotion of positive mental health. The teaching and learning activities of the Department of Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine,  University of Sabaragamuwa (FOM/SUSL) are designed to ensure medical undergraduates receive a comprehensive input on all these aspects of core psychiatry that is necessary to practice as a  doctor.

Apart from undergraduate teaching, the department engages in training and educational activities of other health care staff, health promotional activities in the community and facilitates quantitative and qualitative research by academics, other health care workers and students.
