Department of Medicine of SUSL is the new addition to the faculty of Medicine with its advancement to the 3rd year of establishment. Department of Medicine is established at the end of 2020 with the appointment of Prof. Saroj Jayasinghe (former Chair Professor of Department of Medicine, University of Colombo) as the consultant.

The mission of the department is to develop good doctors with sound knowledge, skills, compassion and professionalism. Outstanding patient care, advancement in medical research and contribution to the health of the country is our priority.

The medicine department will be established in the professorial unit attached to teaching hospital Rathnapura and the clinical training will be initially held within the main medical units in the teaching hospital Rathnapura. Further to general medicine training students will get training in medical subspecialties including Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Neurology, Oncology, Nephrology, Venereology, Dermatology, palliative medicine, endocrinology and emergency medicine, encouraging students to achieve carrier fulfilment in general medicine and its subspecialties.

We look forward to changing the practice of disease-centred care to patient-centred care, with emphasis on improving communication skills, promoting respect for each other and enhancing teamwork. Continuous learning, innovation, research and audit will be encouraged within our department.
