Beruwatta Falls

Beruwatta Falls is a captivating waterfall located near Wewelwatta in Ratnapura District. It features a graceful descent of approximately 50 meters, formed as several brooks originating from Rakshagala Mountain converge. The cascading water resembles pure white cotton or a flowing strand of hair—a poetic description that reflects its gentle, yet mesmerizing appearance. The pool at its base offers a serene space, with a rock platform perfect for quiet reflection. Unfortunately, the surrounding ecosystem is currently under pressure from activities such as gem and sand mining, which compromise its natural beauty.

Location & Distance from Faculty

  • Location: Just off the Ratnapura–Wewelwatta–Balangoda road, a few kilometers from Wewelwatta town.

Accessibility & Route

  • From Ratnapura, head to Wewelwatta along the main A4 road.
  • Continue toward Balangoda and look for a small white house or signage indicating the path.
  • A short trail of about 100–400 meters leads through a narrow, potentially slippery path across small streams to reach the waterfall. The falls are not visible from the road, so local guidance or careful observation is useful.

  • Restrooms & Shops: Not available on-site—pack essentials before visiting.
  • Mobile Signal: Inconsistent along the trail.

Best Time to Visit

  • Dry season (December–April): Safer trail conditions and moderate flow make for a more pleasant visit.
  • Wet season (May–August): The waterfall is more dramatic, but the trail becomes risky due to slippery terrain and stronger water currents.
