Department of the Forensic Medicine & Toxicology - Teaching / Learning Activities

Onsite as well as online lectures would be conducted by senior academic staff as well as experienced consultant judicial medical officers of the area. The lectures are interactive providing students opportunities for discussion based on crime investigation. Online lectures would be enriched with polls and other activities to enhance student engagement.

Injured skull, bone and other mounted soft tissue specimens would be used for teaching activities. Discussion of medico-legal reports and presentations would enhance the report writing skills of students.

The clinical appointment will be conducted by the senior consultant judicial medical officer of the Teaching Hospital Rathnapura, which has significant opportunities for learning. This would be complemented by onsite or online teaching and practical sessions by senior academic staff. During the appointment, there would be a mix of the below-mentioned teaching methodologies.

With the facilities currently envisaged, SGD would be conducted on topics ranging from homicide medical investigation, gender based violence to medicolegal management of victims of torture. SGD would also be used to impart report writing skills and presentation skills.  Sensitive communication skills development in the future doctor would be a timed activity.

Students would engage in a mix of role plays ranging from activities to impart communication skills, team skills, testifying skills to hands on crime scene investigation.

Students are expected to observe autopsies and write reports, at the Judicial medical officer’s unit in the TH Rathnapura which would be complemented by video-based teaching of autopsy skills.

The students would be able to critically analyze medico-legal problems like homicides, sexual assault cases handled by the senior academic staff and the Judicial medical officer Rathnapura. Court case law from National law reports and court judgments would be used to impart the art and the science of testifying skills. Critical thinking skills also would be updated in this activity.

Whenever there are cases pending, students may be taken for a court visit especially to observe the doctor giving evidence. This will enable students to understand the role of judicial medical officer and manner of giving expert testimony.

Fixed learning modules are a collection of teaching-learning material like posters, specimens, microscopic slides, court reports that could be used as audiovisual aids instead of face-to-face didactic lectures and facilitate self-directed learning.  As observations in Forensic Medicine are often based on visual recognition, FLM would be a significant mode of learning.
