Department of Primary Care & Family Medicine - Course Outcomes

After the completion of lectures, tutorials and clinical appointments, the students should be able to:

  1. describe the history of modern medicine briefly;
  2. explain the concepts of primary health care and primary care;
  3. explain what Family Medicine is and how it evolved;
  4. explain the roles and functions of a family physician; 
  5. discuss the importance of the doctor-patient relationship in Family Practice
  6. demonstrate effective communication with patients, colleagues, other health professionals and public; 
  7. explain the delivery of primary care, including public and private sectors, in the overall healthcare system in Sri Lanka;
  8. describe common reasons for encounter and health problems in (a) Primary Medical Care Unit (PMCU) (b) Hospital OPD (c) General/Family Practice;
  9. describe screening, health promotion and prevention programs implemented at the three primary care settings;
  10. discuss paper-based and electronic medical records used in the three primary care settings;
  11. discuss consultation and referral in primary care settings and the available services;
  12. demonstrate the ability to write a prescription and a medical certificate and enter details of a clinical encounter in a medical record;
  13. explain the facilities available, including social support, provision of aides and home-based care, to support households and individuals with chronic illness;
  14. discuss how continuity of care is delivered to terminal/palliative care and end-of-life patients;
