Department of Anatomy - Teaching/Learning Activities
Teaching activities are designed to improve & enhance the knowledge, adopt the skills and change the attitudes with professional values teaching techniques are adopted incisive of auditory, visual, and kinaesthetic learning styles of the students. The student-centred learning module has adopted by the Department considering outcomes, such as independent and lifelong learning.
Lectures
Lectures are conducted by the senior academics and designed to give students a broad understanding of the basic concepts of the topic in all components with the use of the modern audio-visual technique.
Small-Group Discussion (SGD) / Tutorial
Main objectives of SGD are development of problem-solving skills, presentation and writing skills in team frame. Small group discussions consist of groups of students of about 12 in number and led by an academic staff member.

Cadaveric dissection and demonstration
Cadaver dissections is an important element in macroscopic anatomy of organ, structure and their relations in normal human body with the expected outcome of hand-on skills and identifications.
Whole-body cadaver dissections consist of groups of students about 10 in number, assigned to a cadaver for dissection under supervision of a staff member. The region-based dissection schedule is concurrent with the ongoing lecture and SGD topics.

Hospital & Clinic Visit
Short duration bedside teaching sessions are arranged related to system-based anatomy and lessons are conducted at the teaching hospital Ratanapura in various wards and laborites.
Distance Learning (Online)
E-learning system has adopted to conduct lectures, tutorials, formative exams to face emergency learning situations and developed information, communication and technology skills of the students. An academic staff member has assigned for each e-learning group which may contain 10 students.
Peer-Group Discussions
We promote students to have peer-group discussions to develop their communications skills and collaborative ability.
Senior Student’s Support Group
Involvement senior batch students to teach junior students are motivated and facilitated by department. Senior students are assigned to each group of junior students to discuss subject matters.
Self-Directed Learning (SDL)
Students are also allotted time for self-study. Materials such as soft tissue specimens, prosected cadavers, latex models and worksheets are available to students for self-directed learning. These sessions are under staff guidance.
Study space is also available in Anatomy museum, which houses a wide array of prosected specimens and students are encouraged to examine the specimens during self-study sessions or any free time.
