Orientation Program for 2022/23 Batch Commences!

We are thrilled to announce the successful commencement of the New Student Orientation 2024 at the Faculty of Computing, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, held on 24th of June 2024. This vibrant event welcomed over 300 eager students ready to embark on their academic journey in four degree programmes.

The event began with a welcome speech by Mrs. RMKK Wijerathana, Coordinator of the Orientation Programme 2024.

Following her, Professor S. Vasanthapriyan, Dean of the Faculty of Computing, addressed the students, briefing about the Faculty's growth. He emphasized the growing demand for IT professionals and the commitment of FoC to producing top-quality graduates through four innovative degree programmes. He underscored the importance of holistic development, industry collaboration, and research opportunities, ensuring that students receive high-quality education and practical experience.

The event was graced by the presence of Senior Professor M. Sunil Shantha, the Vice-Chancellor of SUSL. He highlighted the rapid rise of the University as a center of academic excellence and its significant achievements in teaching. He credited these accomplishments to the collective efforts of many dedicated individuals. He also praised the scenic beauty of Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, widely recognized as one of the most beautiful universities in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Ashique Ali, Past Chairman of Sri Lanka Association for Software Services Companies (SLASSCOM) and an external member of the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Computing, shared inspiring insights with the students. He highlighted the numerous benefits that students can reap through collaboration with SLASSCOM, emphasizing the opportunities for professional growth and industry engagement.

Dr. L.S. Lekamge, Head of the Department of Computing and Information Systems, addressed the students, providing a brief history of the evolution of the Department of Computing and Information Systems initially attached to the Faculty of Applied Sciences, into the Faculty of Computing. She announced the introduction of the Information Systems Degree Programme, which, for the first time, welcomes students from diverse streams to the Faculty. She highlighted the value of the unique talents each student brings and emphasized the Faculty's commitment to nurturing diversity and fostering an inclusive learning environment.

The enrolment of the 2022/2023 batch marks another significant milestone in the history of the Faculty of Computing, with the first batch of students enrolling in the BSc Honours in Data Science Degree Programme. Dr. U.A.P. Ishanka, Head of the Department of Data Science, emphasized the extensive benefits of the computing degree programmes and discussed the variety of extracurricular activities offered by the Faculty of Computing. She highlighted the numerous opportunities for students to participate in research projects, hackathons, and workshops, which are designed to enhance their practical knowledge and problem-solving abilities, preparing them for successful careers in the ever-evolving field of computing. 

Mr. P. Vigneshwaran, Acting Head of the Department of Software Engineering, discussed the value of the Software Engineering Degree Programme. He highlighted the numerous benefits students can gain, including acquiring advanced technical skills, engaging in hands-on projects, and gaining valuable industry exposure through internships and collaborations. 

The Faculty was honored to have Professor Roshan Ragel, CEO of Lanka Education and Research Network (LEARN), a Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, as the keynote speaker. He delivered a special academic speech on generative AI in education. He outlined the introduction to AI, opportunities and challenges of GenAI in education, and concluded with insightful remarks. His speech provided students with a deeper understanding of how AI is transforming the educational landscape and the potential it holds for enhancing learning experiences. By highlighting real-world applications and emerging trends, Professor Ragel inspired students to think creatively and critically about the future of technology in education.

Dr. Pradeep Uluwaduge, Senior Student Counselor of SUSL, offered words of encouragement to the students, assuring them of his ongoing support and guidance. A video showcasing the University and the Faculty of Computing was then presented, providing new students with a comprehensive and accessible overview. Following the video, Mrs. RMKK Wijerathana explained the weekly plan from June 24th to June 28th, 2024, outlining the activities and events scheduled for their orientation period.

Finally, Mrs. S. Adeeba, Assistant Coordinator of the Orientation Programme 2024, concluded the event with a vote of thanks. The event was moderated by Mrs. K. Kaushalya, a Lecturer attached to the Department of Computing and Information Systems, who ensured the smooth flow of the entire programme.
