The Faculty of Computing (FoC), inaugurated on the 2^nd of January 2023 as the 9^th Faculty of Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, was founded with a clear vision to prosper lives through education and a mission to develop globally competent citizens for a sustainable future, inspired by our rich cultural heritage and wisdom.

Today, computing stands at the heart of every scientific, industrial, and societal transformation. With the rapid evolution of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and the dominance of new technological frontiers highlighted by IEEE such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning, Quantum Computing, Cybersecurity, Sustainable Computing, Digital Twins, 5G/6G Networks, Autonomous Systems, Extended Reality (XR), and Human-Centric Computing we face both unprecedented opportunities and significant responsibilities.

At FoC, we recognize the urgent demand for higher education to prepare graduates not only as users but as creators, innovators, and ethical leaders in these emerging domains. We are committed to equipping our students with hands-on exposure to AI-driven systems, intelligent automation, data science, cloud-native applications, robotics, and secure digital infrastructures, ensuring they are ready to serve Sri Lanka and the global technology ecosystem.

Our strategy is threefold:

1. Curriculum Innovation – integrating IEEE’s focus areas and global best practices into our programmes to ensure our graduates remain industry-relevant.
2. Research & Development – fostering an ecosystem that drives innovation in AI, smart cities, sustainable technologies, and digital health, while aligning with national priorities.
3. Industry & Global Partnerships – strengthening collaborations with IEEE, academia, and industry to create pathways for entrepreneurship, employability, and international exposure.

A university education, in my view, extends beyond academic excellence. It is about shaping individuals who are versatile, ethically grounded, culturally enriched, and capable of teamwork and leadership in a global context. As such, we strive to nurture well-rounded graduates who will contribute to building a Technology-Driven Smart Nation while also upholding the values of humanity.

Being entrusted as the Founder Dean of the Faculty of Computing is both an honor and a responsibility. I am deeply committed to leading this Faculty into becoming a driving force in Sri Lanka’s journey toward becoming a technology hub, powered by knowledge, innovation, and global competitiveness.

Together, we will rise to the challenge, embrace emerging technologies, and shape a future where Sri Lanka stands strong in the global knowledge economy.
