Department of Data Science

The Department of Data Science (DDS) at the Faculty of Computing, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka was established in 2022 offering Bachelor of Science Honours in Data Science with the aim of catering to produce competent Data Science graduates who are well equipped with theoretical and technical knowledge and skills and to increase industry requirement for Data Science professionals. At present, the Department is empowered with a highly qualified and competent panel of academic staff members who have graduated from well-known national and international universities and are specialized in core areas of Data Science.
A comprehensive undergraduate curriculum is offered by the degree programme leading the students to be industry leaders specialized in Data Science, with both general analytical skills and knowledge that reflect the specific nature of each of the disciplines and then leading to subsequent expansions to postgraduate level knowledge transferring activities. And also, the degree programme significantly contributes to the body of knowledge in Data Science by establishing and promoting a strong research culture among the undergraduates necessary to meet the challenges of real life and play their role in building up the National Economy. The curriculum also presents a list of principles that embraces both general Data Science principles as well as those that reflect the special nature of Data Science.
The DDS is planning to improve the recognition and visibility of the University and to cater to the development of the department through enhanced engagements and improved collaborations with related local as well as international data analytical related public and private sector organizations through various activities such as Designing and development of academic programmes, Designing and development of curricula, Research collaborations, Providing internships and employment, Commercialization of products, Conducting visiting lectures, Conducting workshops/ seminars/ training/ mentoring programmes etc. This will be beneficial for both the Department and the ICT/BPM industry of Sri Lanka.
