Inauguration of New Computer Laboratory at the Faculty of Computing

The Faculty of Computing at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka proudly unveiled its new Computer Laboratory in a modest yet meaningful ceremony held on 06th November 2024 at the faculty premises. The event was attended by a distinguished group of university officials, marking an important milestone in the faculty’s ongoing efforts to enhance its educational infrastructure and provide students with cutting-edge resources for their academic pursuits.

The ceremony was graced by Professor M. Sunil Shantha, Vice Chancellor of Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, Mr. Saman Uyangoda, the Registrar, Ms. Shirani De Silva, the Bursar, and Professor B.T.G.S. Kumara, Director of the Center for Computer Studies. These key figures joined together to celebrate the opening of the new laboratory, which is set to significantly improve the faculty’s educational offerings.

The Dean of the Faculty of Computing, Professor S. Vasanthapriyan invited Professor M. Sunil Shantha, Vice Chancellor of the University, to officially open the new lab, where he performed the ceremonial ribbon-cutting and unlocked the laboratory doors. The Dean, in his address, emphasized the significance of the new computer lab in supporting the faculty’s mission to provide high-quality education in the field of computing.

The inauguration was attended by the academic staff and the Heads of the three departments within the Faculty of Computing. The event was a symbol of the commitment and collaborative spirit of the university’s leadership in fostering an environment conducive to learning, research, and innovation. The new lab was then officially handed over to the students of the faculty, who are eager to take full advantage of the advanced resources now at their disposal. As the newest faculty at Sabaragamuwa University, the Faculty of Computing continues to evolve rapidly, focusing on acquiring the resources necessary to meet the growing demand for quality computing education. Professor S. Vasanthapriyan shared his vision for the future, revealing that the next goal for the faculty is to acquire additional infrastructure and facilities to further improve the quality of education and research opportunities for students.

The new computer laboratory is equipped with high-performance workstations, specialized software, and modern tools to support research in fields such as data science, artificial intelligence, programming, and systems development. With this new addition, the Faculty of Computing is positioning itself as a hub for computing excellence, fostering innovation, research, and the development of highly skilled professionals in the ever-evolving technology sector.
