Department History
The Department of Management Studies commenced as one of the founding departments in September 1996 offering three-year special degrees namely Bachelor of Science in Business Studies (Business Management), Bachelor of Science in Business Studies (Marketing Management), and Bachelor of Science in Business Studies (Tourism Management) consisting of one-year foundation and two years of specialization. The year 2003 was an indelible year for the department as the department was renamed; The Department of Business Management (DBM), the three-year degree programs were changed to four-year degree programs with necessary changes in curricula and examination criteria under the approval of the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2003. Thereby the Department offered two-year common programmes and two specialization years and the medium of instruction of all degree programmes conducted by the Department is English. Subsequently, the Department offered three degrees; B.Sc. Business Management (Special), B.Sc. Marketing Management (Special) and B.Sc. Tourism Management (Special). Later B.Sc Tourism Management (Special) degree programme (in 2006) and B.Sc. Marketing Management (Special) degree programme (in 2008) were taken out from the Department of Business Management and established under two separate departments attached to the Faculty of Management Studies. Currently, the department offers BSc Honours in Business Management degree program. Mr. D. Jasinghe was the very first head of the Department of Business Management. Later Mr. P.J. Jaythilake, Mr. A.M.J. Attanayake, Mrs. L.D. Kalyani, Mrs. K.L.B.G. Dharmaratne, and Dr. H.P.R. Priyankara served as department heads and Mr. I.A. Ekanayake is the current head of the Department of Business Management. The DBM has extended its precious service by producing thousands of quality graduates and still stands as a remarkable sign by uplifting Sri Lankan society to the next level.
