Erasmus+ EU-SPIRIT Project

The European Commission leads the consortium of 12 universities to research Sports Education in India, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia under the Erasmus plus (+) project. This initiative is aimed at capacity building in the field of sports, physiotherapy, and physical education through research and community development.The European Union’s Erasmus+ plus program is a funding scheme to support activities in the fields of education, training, youth, and sport. Erasmus+ funds academic mobility and cooperation projects that involve partners from "Partner Countries" throughout the world.
The Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka partnering with the University of Peradeniya in this project to create a modular program in Sri Lanka in sport, physical education, and health sciences that contribute to increasing the recognition of the fundamental value of sport and physical activity for the individual and society.

The project will address the issues of inclusion, diversity, and integration of vulnerable groups and students with special needs through sports and physical education as well. The project expects to develop a multidisciplinary approach in education, sport, and health sciences in line with Bologna standards that promotes inclusive education and correct nutrition through modular courses, lifelong learning programs, and sports events.

Memorandum of Understanding signed virtually due to the prevailing COVID19 situation. The Vice-Chancellor of the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka Professor Udaya Rathnayaka signed the MOU on behalf of the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka and Dr. Rasangi Sabaragamuwa, the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences graced the occasion.

Mrs. Thanuja Liyanage Lecturer of the Department of Sports Sciences and Physical Education (SSPE) serves as the manager and the coordinator of the project, Mrs. Harshani Perera Head of the Department of SSPE, Professor Kapila Rathnayaka, Mrs. Lakshika Madhushani, Mrs. Deepanjali Weerarathna, Mr. Sameera Lakruwan Perera, Mrs. Milani Jayasinghe, Mrs. Mangala Samarakoon, Mr. L Sarmilan, and Mr. Udaya Herath are in the project team along with Mrs. Geethani Rajapaksha as the project secretary.


General Objective Create a modular program in Sport, physical education, and Health Sciences in 3 countries of Asia that contribute to increasing the recognition of the fundamental value of sport and physical activity for the individual and society, well beyond competition, as a powerful tool for the promotion of healthy lifestyles and socioeconomic development - putting special emphasis in vulnerable groups, female and students with special needs.

Specific Objectives

  1. Collection of EU and Asian best practices in inclusive practices through sports activities within curriculum and guidelines for inclusive universities.
  2. Development of curriculum and teacher training programs that enhance inclusion, diversity, tolerance, and healthy lifestyles.
  3. Development of LLL programs for trainers, coaches, sports clubs, and local communities
  4. Creating student sportsclubs’ units within HEIs that promote inclusion through student sports activities and volunteerism.  
  5. Raising awareness of the activities developed in the project as a model for enhancing inclusive education and healthy lifestyles among local society and students.
  6. Creating local communities of practice and network of sport as a vehicle for inclusive education
