1. Accelerating Higher Education Expansion and Development (AHEAD)
Enriching Learning, Teaching, Assessment and English Language Skills Enhancement Development Project (ELTA-ELSE DP). An Allocation of Rs. 15 Million award has been won by the Department of Economics and Statistics (DES) and the department is working on the following five activities targeting the enhancement of English language skills, achievement of academic excellence, and development of socio-emotional skills of department academic staff, undergraduates and non-academic staff.
Activity 01: Enhancing the quality of Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) of all course units under DES with subject-oriented English language proficiency.
Activity 02: Integrating and sharing the specialities of industrial and other stakeholders to develop market orientation of current degree programmes.
Activity 03: Introducing "Green Concept" for LTA and administration in DES.
Activity 04: Establishing a direct integration of selected course units in the three degree programmes in to the socio economic development.
Activity 05: Establishment of an assistance centre for students in DES.

2. The best researcher of the Faculty of Social Sciences & Languages, 2020
Professor HMS Priyanath, a professor in Economics in our department has been awarded as the best researcher of the Faculty of Social Sciences & Languages, 2020 in the 25th anniversary celebration event of the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka on 2nd February 2021. He has been also appreciated as one of the pioneer members of the university since 1996.
3. Signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the InnoLabs (Pvt) Ltd
The Department of Economics and Statistics (DES), Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages of the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (SUSL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the InnoLabs (Pvt) Ltd on 15th December 2021 to collaborative research and development between two parties, giving opportunities for the undergraduates to have the industry experience, participate in a training program conducted within the organization, taking support for the field visits/extra activities from the InnoLabs (Pvt) Ltd.
The MoU was signed by Professor Udaya Rathnayaka (Vice-chancellor of the SUSL), and Mr. B. N.S Karawita (CEO of InnoLabs (Pvt) Ltd.). Dr. MACSS Fernando (Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages), Dr. P. G. N Danushka (Director, InnoLabs (Pvt) Ltd.), Ms. T. Madushani (Research Analyst, InnoLabs (Pvt) Ltd.), Professor HMS Priyanath (Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies), Professor A Aruna Shanthaarchchi, Dr. RAHM Rupasingha (Head, Department of Economics and Statistics), Dr. GRSRC Samaraweera (Project Coordinator, AHEAD/DES), Ms. KS Ranasinghe (Activity Coordinator, AHEAD/DES) academic staff of the Department of Economics and Statistics, Mr. Saman Uyangoda (Registrar, SUSL) were also present for the virtual ceremony.
4. The best researcher of the Faculty of Social Sciences & Languages, 2021
Professor A Aruna Shanthaarachchi, a professor in Economics in our department has been awarded as the best researcher of the Faculty of Social Sciences & Languages, 2021 in the 26th anniversary celebration event of the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka on 2nd February 2022.
5. Speechcraft Programme - Conducted by Siyane Toastmasters Club
The academic staff members of the Department of Economics and Statistics successfully completed the speechcraft programme conducted by Siyane Toastmasters Club. It was conducted as ten days program from 22.12.2021 to 21.02.2022. The awards ceremony was held on 14th March 2022 at 2.00 pm in the board room of the vice-chancellor's office.
6. Signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Verité Research (Pvt) Ltd
The Department of Economics and Statistics (DES), Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages (FSSL) of the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (SUSL) signed an MoU with the Verité Research (Pvt) Ltd on 01st June 2022 to collaborative research and development between two parties, giving opportunities for the undergraduates to have the industry experience and participate the different activities from the Verité Research (Pvt) Ltd.
The MoU was signed by Professor Udaya Rathnayaka (Vice-chancellor of the SUSL), and Mr. Nishan de Mel (Executive Director, Verité Research (Pvt) Ltd.). Dr. Sampath Fernando (Dean, FSSL), Ms Subashini Abesinghe (Research Director, Verité Research (Pvt) Ltd.), Ms Nirasha Jayathilake (Head of Human Resources, Verité Research (Pvt) Ltd.), Dr. RAHM Rupasingha (Head, DES), Dr. GRSRC Samaraweera (Project Coordinator, AHEAD/DES), Ms. KS Ranasinghe (Activity Coordinator, AHEAD/DES), academic staff of the DES, Mr. Saman Uyangoda (Registrar, SUSL) were also present for the ceremony.
7. The best researchers 2022
Professor H.M.S. Priyanath was awarded as the "Best Researcher (Senior) 2022 of the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka in recognition of the research excellence in the field of Economics" and Dr. R.A.H.M. Rupasingha was awarded as the "Best Researcher 2022 of the Faculty of Social Sciences & Languages in recognition of the research excellence in the field of Computer Science" at the 27th Anniversary, University Day 2023, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka.
