Department of Geography & Environmental Management

The Department of Geography and Environmental Management was established as the fifth department in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages in 2015. The department offers general and four-year honors degree in Sinhala and English medium with a wide range of study fields through theoretical knowledge, skills, geo-spatial applications and interactive field experiences, while providing the students with opportunities for independent study, supervised research, and practical training. Study fields offered by the department are geomorphology, environmental geography, climatology, population geography, regional development and planning, urban geography bio geography, land use planning, disaster management, recreation geography, hydrology and watershed management, human resource management, Geographical Information systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS), medical geography, project planning and management etc.

 

The vision of the department is to be a national and international center of excellence in research and imparting knowledge in the field of Geography and Environmental Management. Mission of the department is to produce professionals equipped with multidisciplinary knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them to contribute creatively in any sphere of employment and contribute for the national and global needs through continuous learning and researching.
