Professor G.R.S.R.C. Samaraweera joined Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka in 2006 after earning a First Class Honours in the Special Degree in Economics from the University of Colombo. She further pursued her postgraduate studies at the University of Colombo, obtaining a Master’s in Economics in 2009 and a PhD in Economics in 2015. She currently serves as a Professor in Economics in the Department of Economics and Statistics, Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages, at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka.
Her primary teaching areas include Econometrics, Human Resource Economics, the Economy of Sri Lanka, and Advanced Microeconomics.
In addition to her academic role, she actively contributes to university administration, serving as an Academic Sub-Warden, Student Counsellor, and Coordinator of the BA General External Degree Programme. She also serves as the Coordinator of the AHEAD project, funded by the World Bank, aimed at enhancing higher education in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, she worked the Chairperson of the Study Board in Social Sciences at the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Currently, she holds the positions of Programme Coordinator in Economics in the Department of Economics and Statistics and Coordinator of the External Degree Programme in Economics. Additionally, she is a member of the Board of Studies in Social Sciences at the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Board of Study of the Centre for Indigenous Knowledge and Community Studies (CIKCS).
Professor Samaraweera has played a key role in organizing several academic conferences and research sessions. She served as the Secretary of the National Conference on Traditional Knowledge in 2009, the Coordinating Secretary of the 6th International Conference of Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka in 2017, the Secretary of the Third Students’ Research Session at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages, and the Secretary of the 7th Annual Research Session of Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. In 2023, she was the Founding Chairperson of the International Conference on Social Sciences and Languages hosted by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages.
Currently, she holds editorial leadership positions as the Editor-in-Chief of the Sri Lanka Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities and Editor of the Sri Lanka Journal of Economics, Statistics, and Information Management.
