Sports Sciences and Physical Education

Background

Welcome to the Sport Sciences and Physical Education Alumni Association, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. The Sport Sciences and Physical Education Alumni Association was established in the year 2011 by the Department of Sport Sciences and Physical Education. Alumni Association serves as the umbrella organization for the department's alumni from all of its disciplines and serves as a bridge between its members and the department. Numerous notable and accomplished alumni have served as the Association's office holders. The Association still plays an important part in fostering strong ties between the student body, university, and alumni.

 

Objectives

The objectives of this alumni association are to build active communication network among all the present and ex-students of the Department of Sport Sciences and Physical Education through various programs and to contribute in the academic development of the Sport Sciences and Physical Education Department.

 

Specific Goals

  1. To build up relationship among the members of the organization through educational, cultural, social and welfare programs.
  2. To help prepare students for the global job market.
  3. To highlight the problems and prospects of the field of Sport Sciences and Physical Education through different media.
  4. To unite the members of the organization in the bonds of friendship, fellowship and mutual understanding through arranging reunion, picnic, tour, sports etc.
  5. To encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standard in Sport Sciences and Physical Education profession.
  6. To make liaison with other Sport Associations in home and abroad and exchange views and ideas, to take up various projects jointly and arrange exchange programs.

  Sonali Yesmin Jayasinghe

  Physical Therapist, / Health & Physical Education Educator,

  Institute of Sports Medicine - Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs.

  Sports Medicine Unit - Teaching Hospital, Karapitiya.

 

I am a proud alumnus of the University of Sabaragamuwa. My specialization lies in the field of sports medicine as a physical therapist as well as an educator. The university provided me with invaluable exposure, nurturing my skills and knowledge in this domain.

 

With a solid foundation in human anatomy, physiology, Biomechanics, Injury Prevention, and rehabilitation techniques, I am dedicated to providing exceptional care to athletes and individuals dealing with sports-related injuries. I stay updated with the latest advancements in evidence-based practice to ensure optimal outcomes for my patients.

 

I take great pride in representing the University of Sabaragamuwa as an alumna. My journey in the sports medicine field has been shaped by the education and experiences I gained at this esteemed institution. As an inspiration to current students and aspiring professionals, I continue to contribute to the advancement of sports medicine through my expertise and dedication.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Eranga Chrishanthi Fernando

 

Eranga Chrishanthi Fernando graduated in 2013 in B.Sc. Physical Education (Honours) degree program from the first batch (batch of 2008/2009) of the department as the only First-Class degree holder. She was also the recipient of the “Student of the Year Gold Medal” awarded by the university for the student with excellent overall performance in academic studies, sportsmanship, and interest in aesthetic and cultural activities, proven leadership, exemplary conduct, and character during the academic period in the university. Adding to her excellence she received the “Prof. Jan Wright Gold Medal” awarded by the Department of Sports Sciences and Physical Education (DSSPE) for the best performance in the Department of Physical Education (PE) in the 15th General Convocation and “Best Poster Presenter” at the finale year research project presentations of the Physical Education degree programme, in the 14th Annual Research Sessions in 2013 confronting her original research of ‘Voices for Insufficient Requirements for Girl-Athletes in Sport Schools’ supervised by Dr. A.W.S. Chandana. She gained her Master’s Degree in Sport and Olympic Studies from the Master's Program in Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences at Graduate School of Comprehensive Human Sciences, University of Tsukuba, Japan with the Award for “Best Overall Accomplishment” in the academic year 2019-2021.

 

She has worked in the capacity of a Guest Lecturer in Olympic and Paralympic Education at the Tsukuba International Academy for Sport Studies, Japan (2021 & 2022); Project Director in an International Sport NGO functioned in Sri Lanka (2015-2017); and a Lecturer and Demonstrator in Physical Education (2013-2015). Her professionalism extends as a volunteer scholar since 2013 in sport and value-based community education programs conducts nationally and internationally. Respecting her dedication and capacity she was awarded as one of the global ambassadors by the Olympism for Humanity Alliance Organization (O4HA) in 2020.

 

Eranga is currently working for the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOCSL) as the Senior Analyst cum Deputy Team Leader for the Strategic Plan Development. Plus, she is one of the members of the Education Committee and is a Provisional Program Director of the Advanced Sport Management Course of the NOCSL. Her vision in life is to “celebrate life harmoniously;” by pursuing her potentials and capacity by devoting to her family, working organisation, and to the communities in need.
