What are the degree programmes offered by the Faculty of Applied Sciences?
The Faculty of Applied Sciences offers eleven degree programmes, namely:
- Bachelor of Science Honours in Food Science and Technology
- Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management
- Bachelor of Science Honours in Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management
- Bachelor of Science in Physical Sciences
- Bachelor of Science Honours in Applied Physics
- Bachelor of Science Honours in Chemical Technology
- Bachelor of Science Honours in Computer Science and Technology
- Bachelor of Science Honours in Physical Education
- Bachelor of Science Honours in Sport Sciences and Management
Who can apply for the degree programmes offered by the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka?
The degree programmes are available for students who studied their G.C.E. (A/L) in Physical Science, Biological Science, Commerce, Arts and Technology streams and they must apply through the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Sri Lanka, following the regular application process.
What is the medium of degree programmes?
All the degree programmes are offered in English medium.
I.e. Teaching,Examinations and all other assessments are conducted in English.
When will these degree programmes start?
The degree programmes are scheduled to commence on November/ December each year for the qualified students in the GCE Advanced Level examination held in the previous year(e.g. students qualified at the G.C.E (A/L) 2019 can apply for the 2020 intake). However, the exact date will be decided after receiving the registered students’ list from the UGC. The courses will be commenced as soon as the list is received by the University.

How do I select my favorite degree programme?
When you select the University, students are given with an opportunity to select the degree programme based on their preferences, Z-score and G.C.E. (A/L) subject stream during the application process at the UGC level.
How can I find the accommodation for stay during my academic period?
The students who have registered for the degree programmes of the Faculty of Applied Sciences are eligible for hostel facilities provided by the University for an Annual Fee of Rs. 500.00. However, priority is given for the students those who come to the University away from more than 20 kilometers, as a usual criterion.
Can I get the medical facilities when it is required?
University medical center provides all the general medical facilities to all registered students and once in a week students are allowed to visit the medical center to consult the medical officers. In case of an emergency, the students are provided with all the necessary medical treatments including hospitalization etc.
Do I need to be fluent in English?
During the orientation period, students are provided with the required English language proficiency by several activities and tasks. After the orientation programme, a professional English language programme is regularly offered during the degree programmes for further improvement. If students can improve their English language proficiency before entering the University, it would be an added advantage for their academic work as all the academic programmes are conducted in English medium.
What kinds of facilities are available to improve my academic career in the University?
A Well-equipped library is available in the University with online access to e-books, scientific journals and other audio books in addition to the lending and reference section of the books and journals. A separate reference section with reading facilities is available.
There are several computer labs is equipped with the internet facilities, statistical packages and accounting packages for the specific course units to cater the need of students. Wi-fi accessible internet facilities are installed around the Faculty premises for the easy access of the students.
There are several discipline-specific laboratories where the regular practical sessions are conducted for the students to improve their experimental skills. Advanced facilities and equipment are also available for research and development purposes.
A separate language lab is established to improve the English language skills of the students.
Field visits and industry visits are organized in connection with the curriculum to expose students to global knowledge and practices.
A large sports ground located in a scenic environment and other indoor and outdoor sport facilities are available for both subject students and other students.
What are the additional services provided for the mental and physical improvement of the students?
Academic staffs are well trianed with the mentoring process to improve and help students to focus on their career goals and targets providing necessary information and directions through a mentoring programme.
A separate panel of student counselors are available to help the students to solve their issues in confidential manner and if any student need special attention for their problems, necessary guidance and directions will be provided to succeed in their academic and professional career.
All the welfare facilities are provided by the Faculty in collaboration with the student Welfare Department of the University.
Students are facilitated to strengthen their physical health and to enhance the special skills on sports activities in connection with Physical Education Department. Students who possess prior achievements in sports activities will be given special attention to improve their skills and achievements further in the University level.
Furthermore, students will get an opportunity to engage in diverse range of activities with the support of academic staff. During the academic programmes, workshops and seminars are organized to improve their soft skills and hard skills.
What is the procedure to report the absence for an exam due to a medical reason?
Students should submit the medical certificates with a request letter to Dean Office of the faculty through the relevant department issued by a medical practitioner confirming the illnesses by getting endorsed by of the medical Centre of the University, within the 14 days from absence in an examination. Action will be taken according to the examination by laws of the University.
Is it compulsory to attend the lectures?
Yes, Students are required to attend the regular lecture sessions conducted by their respective department in each semester. To sit for the final/end semester exam, students must fulfill the minimum requirement of 80% attendance for the lectures in respective course. Those who fail to fulfill this aforementioned requirement, will not be eligible to sit for the examination in ‘proper’ condition.
What are the options available for the deferment of the degree programme?
If a student needs to apply for a deferment option for his or her degree programme, he or she can make a request to the faculty board of the Faculty, through head of the department under a valid reason. However, she or he has to complete the degree programme within eight (8) years from registration date for the degree programme in the University, though deferments were granted.
