Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka through University Business Linkage Cell has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the State Ministry of Gem & Jewellery Related Industries on 11th November 2021 to establish a mutual collaboration in enhancing the teaching and research activities with the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka and the gem community including in Sri Lanka. The agreement was signed by the Vice-Chancellor of Sabaragamuwa University; Prof. Udaya Rathnayaka and the Secretary of the Ministry Mr. S.M. Piyatissa. The agreement was witnessed by the Director, UBL Cell; Prof. D.A.I. Dayaratne and Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Dr. Rasangi Sabaragamuwa on behalf of the university and Director (Planning) of the Ministry Mr. Wipula Jayasekera and Chairman, National Gem and Jewellery Authority of Sri Lanka, Mr. Thilak Weerasinghe.
During the same event, an open discussion was held with all the participants in initiating mutually beneficial links through sharing the expertise knowledge with FDRE Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MOMP), Ethiopia via skill transfer from skilled Sri Lankan gemologists and gem industry experts which is to be continued under the guidance of University Business Linkage Cell and the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
