Sabaragamuwa university of Sri Lanka and Food and Nature (Pvt.) Ltd. (FADNA) have bridged in commercializing a herbal tea composed of antidiabetic medicinal herbs with the market title, “Diabe Tea Sabaragamuwa” stamping university’s first product launch. The product was formulated by a research team of the Faculty of Applied Sciences as a funded project by RIC STEM HEMS No: 18 of the AHEAD program.

This herbal tea is a readily accessible functional food product produced with natural ingredients that can control diabetes mellitus (DM) while promoting a healthy well-being to the whole society. Our new innovation, “Diabe tea Sabaragamuwa” is value-added with “Madan’ and “Thripala” blend with black tea (Camellia sinensis) with scientifically proven functional properties such as anti-diabetic and antioxidant activity. Undoubtedly, this product will be a significant benchmark in the value-addition of tea and an attractive business model for the Food and Nature (Pvt.) Ltd.

The Licence agreement for commercialising the above product was signed on 15th February, 2021 granting exclusivity to Food and Nature (Pvt) Ltd. The product launching ceremony was held on 30th March 2022 under the brand name of Fadna “Diabe tea Sabaragamuwa” at the Staff Development Centre of the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. This noteworthy accomplishment fulfils a valuable milestone of University Business Linkage Cell (UBLC) and the university in sustaining socio-economic development via university technology transfer.
