A meeting to find the possibilities of collaborations between the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka and State Ministry of Gem & Jewellery Related Industries was held on 29th March 2021 at the Vice-Chancellor’s Office with the intention of exploring the opportunities of the gem industry while enhancing the teaching and research activities with the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka and the gem community in Sri Lanka. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Udaya Rathnayake, Director – UBLC Prof. Indunil Dayaratne, Vice Chairman, University Grant Commission (Principal Investigator) Prof. Chandana P Udawatte, Dean-Faculty of Applied Sciences Dr. Rasangi Sabaragamuwa, Dr. L.V. Ranaweera, Dr. Nuwan Wanniarachchi and Dr. Hasintha Wijesekara, Secretary-SMGJ Mr. S.M. Piyatissa, Chairman-National Gem and Jewellery Authority of Sri Lanka Mr. Thilak Weerasinghe and other dignitaries were the key participants in the meeting. Future prospects of the Ratnapura gem tower project, Vision and mission related to Gem industry in Sri Lanka and the Certificate and Diploma courses on gemology to be offered by Sabaragamuwa University were the key areas discussed during the gathering.
