Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka through University Business Linkage Cell has signed its 1st licensing agreement with Food & Nature Pvt. Ltd by transferring the manufacturing and distribution rights of an herbal low glycemic tea formulation. This herbal tea formulation was invented by a research team of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka comprising Dr. Namal Perera, Dr. Thilini Kananke, Dr. Rasangi Sabaragamuwa, Prof. Kapila Rathnayake, Prof. Udaya Rathnayaka, Prof. Nirmali Wickramaratne, Mr. Darshana Anuradha and Ms. Gayani Dias.
This product was especially developed as a healthy tea for people with diabetes mellitus and the research was funded by the Research Innovation and Commercialization (RIC) grant of the Accelerating Higher Education Expansion and Development (AHEAD) program. This product includes readily accessible nutraceutical formulations and also functional food products satisfying both health and wellness as well as consumer acceptance with the focus of ‘consumer-friendly, flexible enough for everyday use’ concept.
The official ceremony was held on 15th February 2021 at the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. The event was graced by the Vice-Chancellor, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, Mr. Chamendra Somatunga, Managing Director-Food and Nature Pvt. Ltd and other distinguished guests.
