History of DELT

History of the Department of English Language Teaching

The Department of English Language Teaching (DELT) is one of the academic departments within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. The Department holds a unique place in the Sri Lankan university system as it was the first dedicated English Language Teaching department established in a national university. It was officially recognized under the Gazette Extraordinary No. 1462/20, published on 27th February 2006, by the Ministry of Higher Education on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Although its roots go back to an English teaching unit that supported undergraduates across faculties, the Department of English Language Teaching was formally organized as an independent department following this gazetting. Since then, DELT has expanded its role from a service unit into a fully fledged academic department, delivering English language courses across all faculties, introducing English as a Second Language (ESL) as a minor subject, and supporting both students and staff of the University.
