Full Moon Mid-Autumn Festival, Bond between China and Sri Lanka—Teachers and students of the Confucius Classroom at the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka and its affiliated Chinese language teaching branches celebrate the traditional festival
On October 6, 2025, China ushered in the Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the four major traditional festivals. The Mid-Autumn Festival symbolizes reunion, happiness and longing, and is one of the most representative festivals in Chinese culture. In order to allow Sri Lankan teenagers to feel the charm of this cultural treasure more intuitively, on October 3, the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University carefully planned and successfully held the "Full Moon Mid-Autumn Festival, Bond between China and Sri Lanka" Mid-Autumn Festival themed cultural experience event, and specially invited teachers and students from its affiliated Bandarawela Central College and Ferguson High School to gather on campus to celebrate the festival together.

Celebrating the 76th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China | The Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University Attends the National Day Reception Hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka
On the occasion of the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka held a grand National Day reception on the evening of September 25, 2025 (local time). The Vice-Chancellor of Sabaragamuwa University, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Classroom, and teacher representatives were invited to attend the event. Nearly a thousand guests—including H.E. Qi Zhenhong, Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, senior officials of the Sri Lankan government, friends from various sectors of society, diplomats from different countries in Sri Lanka, overseas Chinese, and representatives of Chinese enterprises—gathered together to celebrate this joyous occasion.

The 2025 Autumn Semester Chinese Language Training Program for Staff of the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University Officially Commences
On September 10, the special occasion of China’s Teachers’ Day, the 2025 Autumn Semester Chinese Language Training Program for Staff of the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University officially commenced. This semester offers the 7th Beginner-level Chinese Class and the 2nd Intermediate-level Chinese Class, further supporting Sabaragamuwa University staff in improving their Chinese proficiency and deepening their understanding of Chinese culture. Associate Professor Zhu Song, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Classroom, Chinese government-volunteer lecturers Ms. Zhang Huan and Ms. Xia Zihan, as well as staff representatives from various faculties and administrative units—including the Faculty of Technology, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages, the Examination Centre, the Academic Affairs Division, the Logistics Services Division, the Computer Research Centre, and the Division of Infrastructure and Planning—attended the opening ceremony.

The Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University Successfully held the HSK/HSKK Exams for the Second Half of 2025
On September 7, the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University successfully conducted the offline Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) and the Chinese Speaking Test (HSKK) for the second half of 2025. The exams covered HSK Levels 1 to 6 and HSKK Levels Beginner to Advanced, attracting a total of 114 candidates—a record high for a single test session at the Confucius Classroom. This achievement not only highlights the continued success of the Confucius Classroom in promoting Chinese language education in the local and surrounding regions but also reflects the growing recognition of Chinese as a global language within the local education system.

The 6th Beginner-Level Chinese Language Training Program for Staff of the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University Successfully Concludes
On September 3, the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University held the closing ceremony of the 6th Beginner-Level Chinese Language Training Program for Staff. Nine participants who successfully completed all the courses were awarded certificates of completion, celebrating their progress and achievements in learning the Chinese language.

On August 20, the midterm work meeting for the 2025 Autumn Semester of the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University was successfully held in the conference hall of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages. The meeting aimed to review the achievements of the first half of the year, plan key tasks for the second half, and promote the high-quality development of all Confucius Classroom activities. It was chaired by Associate Professor Zhu Song, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Classroom. Attendees included Dr. Rohan Abeywickrama, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages and Foreign Director of the Confucius Classroom; Chinese government-volunteer lecturers Ms. Zhang Huan and Ms. Xia Zihan; as well as local Chinese language teachers Dr. Noel Dassanayake and Ms. Rangani Maduwanthi, among other core members.

On August 18, 2025, the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University officially launched its first Chinese Language Certificate Program for non-Chinese majors, amid eager anticipation from students and staff across the university. This marked a new step forward in the promotion of Chinese language education.

Four Students from the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University Receive the 2025 International Chinese Language Teacher Scholarship
Recently, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of the Ministry of Education announced the admission list for the 2025 “International Chinese Language Teacher Scholarship.” Students from the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University—Sanduni, Tharushi, Sadana, and Nidhani—stood out from the increasingly competitive applicant pool, thanks to their solid Chinese language skills and strong interest in Chinese culture, and successfully received the scholarship. This September, they will respectively travel to Zhejiang Normal University, Zhejiang University of Science and Technology, Chengdu University, and Yantai University to begin a new chapter of studying in China.


The Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University Holds the 2025 Summer Work Planning and New Semester Work Deployment Meeting
On the morning of July 4, 2025, the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University held a meeting to plan the summer work for July and to organize the teaching activities for the second semester of 2025, which is set to begin in August.
The meeting outlined specific arrangements for the key tasks of the new semester, including Chinese major course instruction, HSK Chinese proficiency exams, the launch of various Chinese language certificate programs, teaching management at each affiliated center, and the preparation of cultural activities.
To ensure the smooth implementation of all tasks in the new semester, the Chinese teaching team will work extra hours during the summer to complete preparatory tasks, such as organizing Chinese certificate programs for students and registering candidates for the HSK exams. Meanwhile, teachers will also make full use of the vacation period for lesson preparation, aiming to welcome the new semester with full energy and thorough preparation.

The Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University, Sri Lanka, Successfully Conducts the 2025 Summer Camp Program in China
From June 7 to 21, the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University, Sri Lanka, held the 2025 “Explore Hubei, Build the Future Together” Summer Camp in China. Organized by Huanggang Normal University in China, the two-week program featured a rich and diverse range of activities, including specialized Chinese language courses, traditional cultural experiences (such as Chinese tea art, pottery, Hanfu, traditional Chinese medicine, painting, and martial arts), as well as visits to famous attractions like Yellow Crane Tower, Hubu Alley, Dabie Mountains, and Yi’ai Lake. Participants also experienced modern technology projects, including the Optics Valley SkyRail and civil aviation training. A total of 14 university students and 5 high school students from the Confucius Classroom’s two affiliated centers took part in the camp, led by Associate Professor Zhu Song, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Classroom, and local Chinese lecturer Ms. Rangani Maduwanthi. The event attracted attention and coverage from multiple media outlets, including China.com and Huanggang Radio and Television Station.

At 9:00 a.m. (local time) on May 29, 2025, the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University held its 2025 Board of Directors Meeting. The meeting was conducted in a hybrid format, both online and offline, and was chaired by Professor M. Sunil Shantha, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Sabaragamuwa University. Deputy Director Hu Xiaoyan from the International Exchange and Cooperation Office of Huanggang Normal University attended online as the representative of Huanggang Normal University. Attending in person were Associate Professor Zhu Song, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Classroom; Dr. Rohan Abeywickrama, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages and Foreign Director of the Confucius Classroom; Professor Manoj Ariyaratna, the first Foreign Director of the Confucius Classroom; Dr. Champa De Silva, Head of the Department of Languages; along with Chinese language teachers and local Chinese teachers, and other relevant board members.

Chinese: A Gift Across Time and Space | The Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University Holds the Staff Chinese Language Training Graduation Ceremony and Hotpot Cultural Experience
On April 29, to celebrate the 16th United Nations Chinese Language Day and the 2025 “International Chinese Language Day,” the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University successfully held the closing ceremony of the 5th Chinese Language Training Program for Staff. The event creatively incorporated a “Hotpot Cultural Experience”, combining language and cuisine to jointly interpret the theme “Chinese: A Gift Across Time and Space” in a multidimensional way.

On January 28, 2025, which coincided with Chinese New Year’s Eve, the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka held the 2024 “Chinese Ambassador Scholarship” Award Ceremony at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages. The event, held in a festive atmosphere, highlighted the spirit of China–Sri Lanka friendship and cultural exchange, bringing additional joy and significance to the occasion. Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University Successfully Concludes March 2025 On-site Chinese Proficiency Test
On March 9, 2025, the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka successfully organized the March session of the on-site Chinese Proficiency Test. The examination covered all levels of the HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) and HSKK (Chinese Proficiency Speaking Test). A total of 55 candidates from diverse backgrounds and age groups across Sri Lanka registered and took part in the tests.

On March 19, 2025, the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka officially launched the sixth batch of its Beginner-level Chinese Language Training Program for university staff. This program attracted the participation of more than 20 staff members from various faculties and administrative units of the university, reflecting the continued enthusiasm of Sabaragamuwa University staff for learning Chinese. On March 28, 2025 (local time), the preliminary round of the 24th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition at Sabaragamuwa University concluded successfully.
The competition, themed “One World, One Family”, consisted of two segments: speeches and talent performances. A total of 29 students majoring in Chinese at Sabaragamuwa University took the stage, delivering fluent Chinese speeches to express their understanding of the theme. They also showcased their diverse talents and unique interpretations of Chinese culture through singing, dancing, recitation, and other creative performances.

Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University Hosts 2025 Dragon Boat Festival Cultural Experience
On May 31, 2025, China celebrated one of its four major traditional festivals — the Dragon Boat Festival. Recognized as the first Chinese traditional festival to be included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, the Dragon Boat Festival embodies rich folk traditions and deep cultural values, serving as an important window for the world to understand Chinese culture.
To give Sri Lankan youth a direct experience of this cultural tradition, on May 26, the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka organized a Dragon Boat Festival Cultural Experience, inviting teachers and students from its Bandarawela Center School and Ferguson High School to join the celebration. Participants explored Dragon Boat Festival customs through a variety of activities, gaining a deeper appreciation of Chinese traditions while building a bridge of friendship for China–Sri Lanka cultural exchange.

The interview panel, composed of Associate Professor Zhu Song (Chinese Director of the Confucius Classroom), Chinese volunteer lecturers Zhang Huan and Xia Zihan, and local Chinese lecturer Ms. Prabhani, conducted in-person interviews with seven candidates from various universities and institutions across Sri Lanka. Chinese characters carry a profound cultural heritage, with roots stretching back thousands of years. In celebration of the 15th United Nations Chinese Language Day and the approaching traditional Chinese solar period Gu Yu (Grain Rain), the Confucius Classroom at Sabaragamuwa University held a Chinese Calligraphy Workshop titled 'Experiencing the Beauty of Chinese Characters' on April 3. 27. In late October 2019, the first Chinese Team of Confucius Classroom arrived at SUSL and the Confucius Classroom was put into practical operation.

28. The opening ceremony of the Confucius Classroom was held on Nov 28, 2019. Mrs. Zou Yuecui, wife of Ambassador Cheng Xuyuan of the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka, Prof. Peng Jin, Vice President of Huanggang Normal University and Prof. Sunil Shantha, Vice Chancellor of SUSL, jointly unveiled the Confucius Classroom.

On December 7-8, 2019, Professor Sunil Shantha, chairman of the Confucius Classroom Board, led the Chinese and local directors to attend the first China-Sri Lanka Cultural Exchange and Cooperation Forum and the launch of the China-Sri Lanka Research Centre for Cultural Exchange and Economic Development of Huanggang Normal University.
