Sitharana Counselling Centre was founded by the year 2010 and located in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. This Centre mainly provides its services to the Students of the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. Additionally, Sitharana extends services to academic, administrative, non- academic staff and the community as well. Counselling today has become a need of all. Sitharana gives a friendly, professional and trust worthy help to come out of difficulties our clients experience. People who go through minor or major problems such as academic issues, relationship problems, study problems, personality or performance related issues, distress due to physical or psychiatric illness, loneliness and moods, addiction etc. get the help of Sitharana. The Centre has developed links with the supportive institutions and organizations in the region. Psychological counsellors at Sitharana works on volunteer basis. Sitharana Counselling Centre is with the objectives of assuring a student friendly, supportive learning environment while shouldering the social responsibility of Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. Sitharana has been a professional friend to hundreds of people.

Objectives

• Initiate and provide individual and group services for the academic, career, and personal development of students and community.

• Promote and provide education, prevention, and outreach activities, and crisis intervention services programs for students.

• Coordinate referrals helping the disturbed boosting a positive learning enhancement, safety, mental health, and personal success.

• Improve the living and learning environment through consultation, training, and community interventions.

Apart from the services rendered by the “Sith Arana” counselling center to the university community, it has further extended its services to outside communities as well. As a result, the counselling center has been able to develop awareness regarding psychological counselling and personality development in the surrounding region. It can also be mentioned that the center maintains close relationships with other institutions around the university including thepolice, divisional secretariat and the surrounding schools and other educational institutions by continuously providing services to uplift the psychological wellbeing of their stakeholders.
