Professor Hewawithanagamage is a prominent Hindi scholar whose contribution to the field of academic and research studies, in addition to culture in both Sri Lanka and abroad, has been immense. He is the Chair Senior Professor of Hindi at the University of Kelaniya, where he has been a faculty member since 1995 and has been at the forefront in the promotion of Hindi language education, research and cultural interaction. He has also held the position of Head of the Department of Hindi Studies and has also served profusely in the academic leadership through his service in the Senate, Faculty Boards, as well as in various academic and quality assurance committees.
The writings of Senior Professor Hewawithanagamage concentrate on Hindi literature, Hindi grammar, and Hindi folklore, with specific emphasis on the comparative analysis of the Hindi and Sinhala literary traditions. He has written and translated a variety of books, including Hindi and Bengali short stories, novels, and folk tales, and has directed and reviewed postgraduate work at the national and international levels. His performance has been acknowledged by numerous awards for excellence in academics, such as the World Hindi Award by the Government of India and State Literary Awards for translation on several occasions.
Besides his scholarly writings, he has also played an important role in the cultural and media industry, serving as a language consultant on films, as a member of national literary and media boards and also as a consultant on language education programs. He has participated in promoting the Hindi language and culture at international conferences, curriculum development, and academic partnerships as well.
Senior Professor Hewawithanagamage got his PhD in Hindi Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He also has an MPhil and a postgraduate diploma from the University of Kelaniya and a BA (Honours) in Hindi Studies from the University of Kelaniya.
