The Department of Education introduced the "Technology Stream" as a new study stream for G.C.E. (A/L) students, in 2013. Consequently, the University Grants Commission introduced new degree programmes in Technology in the state sector universities enabling to accomodate those students who sat for the G.C.E. (A/L) examination from 2015 under the Technology stream. Therefore, in response to this requirement, the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (SUSL) decided to offer the following two degree programs aimed at enrolling 150 students annually 2019 onwards.

     1. Bachelor of Biosystems Technology Honours degree: BBST(Hons)

     2. Bachelor of Engineering Technology Honours degree: BET(Hons)

There is a wide disparity in the Sri Lankan job market in relation to the employability of graduates passing out from the Arts faculties compared to the other professionally oriented faculties. The narrowing of the gap between the science and non-science disciplines in the Sri Lankan education sector has not been given due consideration until recently when the new Technology Stream was introduced.  In order to sensibly address this issue, which is of national importance, SUSL has developed two degree courses that would be offered under a separate Faculty, where the graduate produced will cater to the needs of the industry directly. It is intended to create a novel student-centered teaching and learning environment at the proposed Faculty where the student will be given more time to practice and enhance skills to create and develop new products for possible industrial use.

The core fields covered by these degree programs include bio-energy generation, bio-based products, development of sustainable and environmental safe products, bio-waste management, automobile and mechanical engineering technology, which are globally evolving and emerging areas. As per government policy, it is believed that these degree programs will be able to produce readily employable graduates who can make a significant contribution to the economic development of Sri Lanka.
