Prof. Tilak Hewawasam is a Professor in Geology, Department of Geography, Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. He has won a number of awards including the Prestigious Ananda Coomaraswamy Medal for outstanding contribution towards the advancement of Sri Lankan Geology from the Geological Society of Sri Lanka (GSSL) in 2020 and the President's Award for Scientific Publication with a recommendation by the National Research Council (NRC), Sri Lanka several times.
Prof. Hewawasam obtained his Bachelor of Science (Geology) from University of Peradeniya in 1994 and Master of Philosophy (Geology) from University of Peradeniya in 1996. He also obtained Doctorate of Geomorphology and Surface Geochemistry from University of Berne, Switzerland in 2003. Furthermore, he has completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Management of Geological Risks from University of Geneva, Switzerland.
He is a founder member of Institute of Geology Sri Lanka (IGSL) and handled number of positions such as President (2016), Secretary (2004), Treasure (1998), Joint-editor (Present) in IGSL. Presently, he serves as a Professor at the Department of Geography and as the Director of the Centre for Environmental Studies (CES) of the University of Peradeniya.
