The demand for Social Development and Welfare is high in present socio, economic and political atmosphere in Sri Lanka. Thus, as a way of dissemination of the knowledge and training in the field of social development and welfare targeting surrounding community includes workers in government, non-government and private sectors, the Center for Open & Distance Learning (CODL), Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka conducts the one year Diploma in Social Development and Welfare. Working in social development involves work in collaboration,collective decision making about how a particular community canmove forward in a beneficial way. This diploma program involves ten (10) course unitsto provide enhanced understanding of basicconcepts, theory and issues in the field of social development and welfare in a Sociological perspective emphasizing the acquisition of associated skills.

Eligibility

Three simple passes in G.C.E. (A/L) or (B) G.C.E. (O/L) qualified with minimum three year working experience in the government, private or non- government sectors.

Course Structure

This one-year external diploma with ten (10) course unities to be covered within two semesters (30 credits). Each course of study will complete 45 hours. Highly qualified persons in the relevant field will be provided instructions. The following subjects are available:

1st Semester

DSDW 1113- Sociology for Everyday Life         (03 credits)

DSDW 1123 - Sri Lankan Society                         (03 credits)

DSDW 1133 - Research Methods                          (03 credits)

DSDW 1143 - Soft Skills for Professionals         (03 credits)

DSDW 1153 - Social Work                                    (03 credits)

2nd Semester

DSDW 1213 - Elements of Psychology                (03 credits)

DSDW 1223 - Development Studies                    (03 credits)

DSDW 1233 - Community Health Care               (03 credits)

DSDW 1243 - Introduction to counseling            (03 credits)

DSDW 1253 - Fundamentals of Human Resource Management (03 credits)

Minimum Admission Requirement

• Three simple passes in G.C.E. (A/L)
