    Profile

  • Dr. Abeywickrama commenced his university teaching career as a Lecturer in English in the Department of Languages at the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (SUSL) in 2004. Over the years, he progressed within the department, eventually serving as the Head of the Department of English Language Teaching (DELT) and the Department of Languages (DOL). His leadership roles expanded beyond academic teaching to administrative positions. Hence, he was appointed as the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages at SUSL in 2023, indicating recognition of his capabilities and contributions within the university. Dr. Abeywickrama's research interests encompass several areas within Applied Linguistics and ELT. These include Issues & Developments in Methodology, Testing & Evaluation, Curriculum & Material Design, and Research Methods in ELT. He has a strong publication record, with extensive contributions to both local and international refereed journals. This indicates his commitment to advancing scholarly knowledge within his areas of expertise. Dr. Abeywickrama has held numerous academic and administrative positions at SUSL, indicating a multifaceted contribution to the university's academic and organizational development. His involvement at both national and international levels further underscores his impact and influence within the field of ELT. His doctoral work at Deakin University in Australia focused on professional development (PD) for university-level ESL teachers. This research has provided valuable insights into the importance and implications of PD for educators across various levels of the education system. Overall, Dr. Rohan Abeywickrama emerges as a distinguished academic and administrator with a wealth of experience, a strong research profile, and a commitment to advancing the field of English language teaching, particularly in the areas of methodology, assessment, curriculum development, and professional development.

    I am deeply interested in these fields as they collectively address the core dimensions of language education and its impact on learners. My passion for Applied Linguistics and Research Methods in ELT stems from a desire to bridge theory and classroom practice through evidence-based insights. Areas such as Curriculum & Material Design, Testing & Evaluation, and Methodology allow me to contribute meaningfully to effective and context-sensitive language teaching. I am also drawn to the Use of Literature in ELT and Modern English Literature for their potential to enrich linguistic and cultural understanding. Moreover, I see Teacher Professional Development as essential for sustaining quality education and empowering educators in evolving educational landscapes.
