  • Dr Y. L. Sumal Nandasena is a board-certified Specialist in Public Health. He possesses over 24 years of experience spanning clinical medicine, public health practice, health administration, and academia. Dr Nandasena holds postgraduate qualifications in Community Medicine and Sociology, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach to population health. His academic work integrates epidemiology, health systems research, and social determinants of health.

    His research portfolio includes 40+ peer-reviewed publications in indexed international and national journals, with contributions in areas such as air pollution and health, tuberculosis, non-communicable diseases, and health systems performance. He has also authored multiple books and technical reports, including national policy analyses and practical guides on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in health.

    Dr Nandasena has secured and led numerous national and international research and consultancy projects, collaborating with various international organisations. His work includes large-scale national studies, program evaluations, and methodological innovations in epidemiological research and health system strengthening.

    He has held senior leadership positions within the Sri Lankan health system, including Deputy Provincial Director of Health Services (Western Province) and Regional Director of Health Services (Kalutara Districts) at the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka, where he oversaw both preventive and curative health services and contributed to policy implementation and system reforms.

    His expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial epidemiology has been applied to national-level health planning, including primary health care empanelment, mapping of health facilities, and resource allocation strategies. Dr Nandasena is actively involved in postgraduate teaching and supervision, having guided numerous MSc, MD, and MPhil research projects. He also contributes to professional training programmes in epidemiology, research methods, and GIS for health professionals.
