Professor S. Vasanthapriyan is a distinguished academic leader and ICT professional whose career reflects sustained excellence in teaching, research, institutional leadership, and national and international professional service.
On 3 May 2023, he was appointed the Founding Dean of the Faculty of Computing at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, thereby establishing the University’s ninth Faculty—an important milestone in its academic evolution. Born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, Professor Vasanthapriyan commenced his academic journey with a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science from the University of Peradeniya in 2004, where he was awarded the prestigious Ashoka Amunugama Memorial Award in recognition of his outstanding academic performance.
Pursuing advanced studies, he obtained an MSc in Computer Science and Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, in 2010, followed by a Doctor of Engineering in Computer Science from Wuhan University of Technology, People’s Republic of China, in 2017. His academic excellence was further recognized internationally through the Nuffic Fellowship Award in 2007 and the Chinese Government Scholarship in 2014.
With over twenty years of experience in academia, Professor Vasanthapriyan has served as a Lecturer at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka since 2005. He was appointed the Founding Head of the Department of Computing and Information Systems (CIS) from 2011 to 2014, where he played a pivotal role in developing curricula aligned with ACM and IEEE standards. In 2021, he led the establishment of the BSc (Hons) in Software Engineering degree programme, enrolling its inaugural cohort of 58 students.
He was promoted to the rank of Professor of Computer Science in October 2019. Subsequently, he served as Head of the Department of CIS from May 2020 to October 2022 and was appointed Coordinator of the Faculty of Computing in November 2022. Demonstrating exceptional leadership and commitment, he assumed additional responsibilities as Head of the Department of Data Science and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Computing from January to April 2023.
A highly respected ICT educator and leader, Professor Vasanthapriyan has pioneered numerous transformative initiatives in computing education and digital development. He has held key leadership roles in several professional and scholarly bodies, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS), and the Sri Lanka Association for Artificial Intelligence (SLAAI). A Senior Member of IEEE, he has made significant contributions to the global computing and engineering community.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to ICT education, he was conferred the title “ICT Educator of the Year 2022” by His Excellency President Ranil Wickremesinghe in October 2023. This national award, presented by the Computer Society of Sri Lanka, acknowledges his lasting impact on the advancement of ICT education in Sri Lanka.
In January 2025, Professor Vasanthapriyan assumed the prestigious role of Chair/President of the IEEE Sri Lanka Section, following his service as Vice Chair/Vice President in 2024.
From 1 January 2025, he also began serving a two-year term as a member of the Technical Program Integrity Committee (TPIC), a standing subcommittee of the Conference Quality Committee of the IEEE Conferences Committee, contributing to the integrity and quality of IEEE conferences globally.
Further extending his regional leadership, in November 2025 he was appointed as a Member of the IEEE Region 10 Conference Committee. The Conference Committee operates under the Technical Activities Group of IEEE Region 10 and comprises a select group of experts recognized for excellence in IEEE conference organization and quality management. Professor Vasanthapriyan was invited to serve for a one-year term, an honor reflecting his sustained contributions and expertise in conference quality assurance at both national and regional levels.
On 24 November 2024, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the ICT sector and his visionary leadership in advancing Sri Lanka’s digital transformation, the Computer Society of Sri Lanka conferred upon him the prestigious title of “ICT Leader of the Year 2023.” The award, presented by the Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, stands as a testament to his commitment to excellence, innovation, and service. Through his academic leadership and professional engagement, Professor S. Vasanthapriyan continues to inspire the next generation of ICT professionals, researchers, and leaders.

I currently serve as a Member of the IEEE Technical Program Integrity Committee (TPIC), where I contribute to safeguarding the quality, ethics, and integrity of IEEE conference technical programs worldwide. My responsibilities include reviewing technical program processes, addressing ethical and procedural concerns, and advising conference organizers on compliance with IEEE conference and publication policies. This role has provided significant global exposure and strengthened my expertise in IEEE governance, policy interpretation, and conference quality assurance at an international level.
- Conference Chair – International Conference on Advanced Research in Computing (ICARC 2026)
I am serving as the Conference Chair of the 6th International Conference on Advanced Research in Computing (ICARC 2026) (https://icarc.lk), organized by the Faculty of Computing, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, where I serve as the Founding Dean. ICARC has evolved into a well-recognized international conference, achieving an H5-index of 11, reflecting its growing scholarly visibility, citation impact, and reputation within the computing research community.

IV. Chair – Technical Co-Sponsorship / Conference Quality Management (TCS/CQM) Committee, IEEE Sri Lanka Section
I am currently serving as Chair of the TCS/CQM Committee of the IEEE Sri Lanka Section (2019–2022, 2025; Member in 2024). In this leadership role, I am responsible for:
- Providing strategic guidance to conference organizers and volunteers on IEEE conference quality, scope, and compliance.
- Reviewing and endorsing conference proposals to ensure alignment with IEEE technical, ethical, and financial standards prior to submission.
- Overseeing the technical program quality, organizational processes, and financial compliance of IEEE conferences conducted in Sri Lanka.
This role has positioned me as the primary point of contact for conference quality governance within the IEEE Sri Lanka Section.
V. Chief Organizer – Conference Quality Management (CQM) Workshops
I spearheaded the Conference Quality Management Workshops conducted in 2023, 2024, and 2025, aimed at strengthening the capacity of local IEEE conference organizers. In 2024 and 2025, the initiative was expanded to include all IEEE technical chapters, fostering stronger collaboration between chapters and conference organizing committees, and significantly enhancing awareness of IEEE best practices, review integrity, and publication standards.
VI. Chair – TCS/CQM Committee, IEEE Computer Society Sri Lanka Chapter
I served as Chair of the TCS/CQM Committee of the IEEE Computer Society Sri Lanka Chapter, supporting conference organizers in securing IEEE technical co-sponsorship. In September 2021, I took the initiative to revitalize the long-dormant IEEE Computer Society Sri Lanka Chapter and served as its Chair until March 2023. Under my leadership, the Chapter successfully facilitated technical co-sponsorship for major conferences, including ICARC, MerCon, SCSE, ICAC, and SLAAI, and rapidly emerged as one of the most active and high-performing chapters, earning multiple global and local recognitions by 2022.
- Technical Program Committee (TPC) Chair – ICARC (2021–2025)
From 2021 to 2025, I served as the Technical Program Committee Chair of the IEEE International Conference on Advanced Research in Computing (ICARC). In this role, I was responsible for the end-to-end management of the conference’s technical program, including reviewer recruitment and assignment, enforcement of double-blind review standards, technical session structuring, and ensuring the successful and issue-free publication of conference proceedings in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library.
