Department of Microbiology

Medical microbiology is the study of bacteria, viruses, and fungi and sub viral agents that cause disease in humans, and those that have the potential to cause disease. Teaching and learning Medical microbiology provide an understanding of the aetiology, pathogenesis, laboratory diagnosis, treatment, and prevention and control of infections. Learning of Medical microbiology and clinical work go hand in hand enabling medical undergraduates to relate the knowledge learnt in the subject to cases of infectious diseases seen and discussed in the wards.

The Department of Microbiology is responsible for teaching undergraduates in medical microbiology and conducting research related to infectious diseases. In future, the department hopes to offer research training to undergraduate and post-graduate students and to deliver expert microbiological diagnostic services to the public depending on the availability of the expertise and resources.
