Profile

Mr. Nuwan Weeraratne is a Lecturer (Probationary) in Statistics in the Department of Economics and Statistics, Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. He graduated at the Department of Economics and Statistics, Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages at the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka and He is an MPhil student in Applied Statistics at the Post Graduate Institute of Agriculture (PGIA), University of Peradeniya. He is an enthusiastic, responsible self - motivated, reliable and hard working person. He is a mature team worker and adaptable to all challenging situations. He is able to work well both in a team environment as well as using own initiative. He is able to work well under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines.

 

Research Interests:

He has five broad areas of interest; Multivariate Data Analysis Techniques, Regression Analysis Techniques, Actuarial Science Analysis, Operational Research and Distribution Theory. In each area, his work will continue to strive for a balance between excellence in the practice of statistics on important real-world problems and opportunities to innovate. The use of statistics is expanding rapidly inside and outside of academia, with much of the growth in computationally intensive areas using large data sets from novel sources; we must respond to this growth by developing effective and practical statistical tools and by developing new methods of teaching in and out of the classroom.

 

Educational Qualifications:

  1. M.Phil. in Applied Statistics: Currently He is a MPhil candidate. (PGIA – 2015 Jan to Present)
  2. B.A. Hons (Statistics): Bachelor of Arts Honor Degree in Statistics (1st Class), Department of Economics and Statistics, SUSL. Statistics as the major subject (including theory of probability, sampling techniques and designs of experiments, distribution theory, statistical inference, operational research (OR), econometrics, demographical techniques, computer packages for statistics, multivariate data analysis, binary data analysis, time series analysis, categorical data analysis, survival data analysis, statistical quality control etc.) and Computer Science as the minor subject of my degree programme. (SUSL – 2008 Nov to 2013 July)
  3. Introduction to Actuarial Science: He has successfully completed Introduction to Actuarial Science with 87% grade a course of study offered by ANUx, an online learning initiative of Australian National University - edX. (ANUx - 2015 Oct to 2015 Dec)

PH207x: Health in Numbers; Quantitative Methods in Clinical & Public Health Research: He has successfully completed PH207x: Health in Numbers: Quantitative Methods in Clinical & Public Health Research with 96% grade a course of study offered by HarvardX, an online learning initiative of Harvard University - edX.   1. Most Ven. Balangoda Ananda Maitreya Gold Medal - He has won Gold Medal for the student with the best performance in the FSSL in the 15th General Convocation of the SUSL.
  2. Ananda Samarakoon Gold Medal - He has won Gold Medal for the student with the best performance in Statistics in the Department of Economics & Statistics in the 15th General Convocation of the SUSL.
  3. Batch Top – FSSL - He has awarded the overall outstanding performance (Batch Top) in the first year, second year, third year and fourth year examination of the FSSL, SUSL.
  4. Best Student of the Year - He has awarded the overall outstanding performance (Best Student of the Year) in the grade 9, grade 10 and grade 11 final examination of the Presidents’ College Maharagama.
