Profile

Mrs. Gihani de Silva is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology in the Department of Social Sciences. She is passionate about her teaching, research, counseling, consultancies and administrative roles. She is an ethnographic researcher mainly in the fields of religious and feminist studies. Her recent work focuses on Buddhist nuns in Sri Lanka, including new higher ordination debate, ambiguous social status, identity troubles and social empowerment. Her main areas of teaching come under the fields of Sociology of Religion, Medical Sociology, Applied Sociology, Sociology of Mass Communication, Social Stratification, Post Colonial Studies and Gender Studies.

 

Awards & Scholarships

N.D.S. Silva Memorial Prize for Sociology for the best performance at the final Degree Examination in Arts (BA) held in 2007.

Kulturestudier Scholarship Program in Religion and Power in Pondicherry, India, 2015. The Program is sponsored by Oslo and Arkeshus University College of Applied Sciences (OAUC), Norway.

21st South Asian Feminist Capacity Building Course on Gender, Sustainable Livelihoods, Human Rights and Peace" at the Tewa center, Kathmandu, Nepal, 2016. This Scholarship training program is sponsored by Sangat- A Feminist Network.

“Understanding Masculinities – Engaging Men and Boys towards Gender Equality: An Online Training” is a four-week online course and conducted by the Centre for Health and Social Justice (CHSJ), New Delhi, 2017.
