  Faculty of Agricultural Sciences - Quality Enhancement Fund Grant
   
Introduction  
 

  The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka started the study program of Agricultural Sciences as a three-year degree program in 1995. It was converted to a four-year degree program in 1998. Subjects under four sub divisions of Agricultural Sciences are taught in the study program. They are; Agribusiness Management, Export Agriculture, Horticulture, and Plantation Management. Special attempts are made in the study program to equip undergraduates with relevant knowledge and skills with a view of producing employable graduates.

Improvement of relevance of the study program.  
  The outcome expected would be the producing of agricultural graduates with appropriate knowledge and skills in theoretical, practical and research in the subject. They would also be more competent in the English language and IT. The benefits envisaged are the increased employability and improved quality of graduates. Knowledge of English, other foreign languages and IT will produce more talented and versatile graduates with improved personal qualities.

Improvement of Teaching and learning atmosphere

Improvement of overall efficiency of the library of the faculty and accessibility to information by teachers (academic staff) and students, improvements of teaching technology and exposure to high-tech agriculture are the outcomes envisaged in this area of concern. The expected benefits through the above outcomes are identified as improved efficiency, quality of teaching & learning and improved knowledge seeking ability of students and teachers.

Enhanced competency of students in farm activities.

The development of crop & livestock farms and farm tourism unit are considered to be outcomes of this dimension of the proposed study program. The benefits of these attempts would be the enhanced technical know-how and skills of agriculture. Enhanced employability of graduates in production, research and advisory ventures would be another direct benefit.

Improvement of Infrastructure facilities and reorganization of farm training practicals.

The upliftment of general living conditions and accommodation for students and staff and adequate exposure of students to agricultural production systems in different agro-climatic and socio-economic regions of the country have been identified as the outcomes of this dimension. The benefits envisaged are the socio-cultural harmony among staff and students and producing of higher quality graduates who can be adapted to any socio-cultural set-up.

Improved cooperation with potential employers.

This has been identified as an area of grate importance. The predicted outcome would be the better awareness about the capabilities, skills and quality of graduates produced by the study program and the development of undergraduate curricula with aid of potential employers. The benefits envisaged will be for the entire nation as the study program will be able to produce more employable graduates whose knowledge and skills will be the ones that are looked for by the potential employers, very short waiting time before the first appropriate employment and producing of graduates that possess the skills and knowledge required especially by the private sector which is considered to be the engine of growth of Sri Lanka.

Sustainability of the study program.

Sustainability has been given deep thought during the designing of this quality enhancement effort. The outcomes envisaged are the development of commercial farm and offering of services such as testing and research for commercial agriculture sector & farming communities of Sri Lanka. The benefit envisaged is the sustainability of the study program through generation of own funds from companies, donors and farming communities at increasing rates
