Proposed Schedule for Career Guidance Activities – 2008
Career Guidance Unit
Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka

The activities undertaken by the unit can be classified as follows.
   
Orientation Programmes

Freshers Awareness programme for freshers, organized at the faculty level.

  • Orientation programme for freshers on adaptation to the University Culture.
  • Publish a Career Guide to give a general idea to new comers about the role and the importance of Career Guidance Unit in the University.
  • Providing undergraduates opportunities for meeting prospective employers and explore potent opportunities.
Seminars

The event will be organized once a month for all the students of the university.

  • Cultural sensitivity, adoptability and career development for job market.

  • Psychology and self- development

  • How to sell yourself (present day trends in job market)

  • Career planning and preparation.

  • Are you matching your skills in your self and attitudes with available opportunities?   

  • Attitudes required for the modern world of work

Workshops

We hope to schedule and conduct some workshops on the following topics for the final year students.

             Certificate programme on skills -1

(a)  Improving life skills: For personal skill development

I           Evaluation of personal skills- career related skills development

ii           Initiate information gathering and select target employers.

iii          Communication Skills; and interpersonal skills development.

iv          Coping with emotions.

v.         Problem solving and decision -making

v          Understanding the world of work: industrial awareness.

vi          Personality development programme for employability.

  (Two days workshops session)        

             Certificate programme on skills development-II

             (b)For Job oriented skill development

 *          Information Technology (IT) skills development.

*          Team work and responsibilities.

*          Leadership qualities (Creative listening, role model, goal setting and creativity and creative thinking).

*          Art of writing an effective CVs and covering letters.

*          Information skills (preparing for interviews, information on Institutions, files and papers, entry, seating, responding to questions, establishing confidence)

*          How to conduct meetings

*          Public relations and negotiation skills (conflict resolution and negotiation skills).

(c)        How to build up an efficient and productive career.

(One day workshop session) 

(d)        Improving Entrepreneual skills

(One day workshop session) 

(e)     Time Management and punctuality

(One day workshop session)

Facilitating Job opportunities           

 We hope introduce a job opportunity facilitation programme for graduates in the final year by establishing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with private sector institutions.

 The objective of this programme is to provide facilities to graduates to obtain the chances to participate in interviews and training, and broaden the occasions for graduates to get job opportunities through this programme. We hope to arrange and provide facilities for placement interviews by coordinating the meeting of graduates and the employers. We further hope to conduct this as a continuous programme.
